Creative Therapy

Therapy for creative blocks and writing anxiety.

Do you want to write, but find something inside you freezes when you try?

You may have ideas, stories, or a quiet desire to write that you’ve carried for a long time, but when you sit down to begin, it suddenly feels difficult.

You might find yourself staring at a blank page, overthinking every word, or avoiding writing altogether, even though it matters to you.

You may also feel unsure about calling yourself a ‘writer’, or even slightly embarrassed about wanting to write at all.

This is a very common experience.

Creative blocks are rarely about laziness or lack of discipline.

More often, they are connected to anxiety, perfectionism or a fear of being judged

Why writing can feel so difficult

Writing asks us to express something personal-our thoughts, ideas, and sometimes parts of ourselves that feel vulnerable.

When the mind senses that vulnerability, it can respond by creating pressure, self doubt or avoidance.

Over time, the brain can begin to associate writing with discomfort or risk, which leads to the feeling of ‘freezing’ when you try to start.

How therapy can help

Therapy provides a space to understand what is happening beneath the surface.

Together we can explore:

  • the anxiety or pressure that appears when you try to write
  • perfectionism and self-criticism
  • fears about not being good enough or being judged
  • the patterns that lead to avoidance or freezing

As these patterns become clearer and the nervous system begins to settle, writing often starts to feel more accessible again.

My approach focuses on the emotional and psychological side of creativity rather than writing technique.

We work gently and at your pace, often beginning with small manageable steps that help rebuild a sense of safety around writing.

The aim is not to force creativity, but to create the conditions where it can emerge mare naturally.

Over time, many clients find they are able to:

  • sit down to write without the same level of anxiety
  • approach writing with curiosity rather than pressure
  • trust their voice and ideas more
  • take meaningful steps into writing, even if they are small at first

Is this right for me?

This work may be helpful for you if:

  • you’ve always wanted to write but feel unable to begin
  • you freeze or avoid writing even though you want to do it
  • you struggle with perfectionism or fear of not being good enough
  • you feel unsure or self-conscious about calling yourself a writer

You don’t need to have any prior writing experience.

Many people I work with are simply exploring a creative desire they’ve carried quietly for a long time.

As both a therapist and writer, I understand how vulnerable creative expression can feel.

Writing can bring up self-doubt, pressure, and uncertainty, but is can also be deeply meaningful when those barriers begin to soften.
